Snow in a desert

These have been busy holidays! I have not had the time to paint, but now it is "back to normal". Hope to paint a few plein air snow pictures in the coming days.
Here is  a picture from today. It is of a dry area East of Bend, covered in snow. It snows there more than it does in Portland.  Yes, Oregon has a semi- desert with sage bush and juniper trees!

Today I wanted to paint more snow scenes. Our friend took the kids up to the mountain to snowboard. We had a large amount of snow over the last few weeks. The kids thought that the snow and the company were "Amazing!". There was a foot of fresh powder  and the sun. I felt inspired to record some of the joy.
Here it is.

Koi 5

This one is the fifth fish in a series of ten. This one is of a "butterfly koi" type of Koi. I think this type is much more graceful and feminine compared to the "regular" kind. I had difficult time taking a photo of the painting without the reflections, so the background is a little darker in real life. The underpainting is burnt sienna that is peaking through in a few places.

I have been thinking of painting the palm tree reflections for a long time. The idea came to me in Hawaii. In the dreary gray Oregon winter days I dream of bright colors. I like the idea of reflections- vague, but specific enough to know what the subject matter is. The format is unusual - narrower but long. Making water look real was challenging!

I keep using ultramarine blue for under painting. It works well for pictures of water.

One of the places I feel most at peace is San Juan islands. They are located four hours away from Portland and we are trying to go there every other year. The islands cut the waves and allow the ocean water to look glassy and reflective, like that of a lake.

I normally use sienna for under paintings. I read about using blue- dark ultramarine color for pictures of water. I tried it on this picture and, even thought it felt odd, I'm pleased how it turned out, so there will be more blue under paintings for sure.

Lazy afternoon

The reference photo is from Europe. I liked the strong shadows and a pattern they create on the cat. It is 12x12 in, oil on stretched canvas.

Fresh tracks

We are up at Medows today- one of the ski resorts in Oregon. There has been a lot of snow over the last few days due to a couple of very wet storms. My family went snowboarding and I had two hours of an uninterrupted painting time. I was painting a picture from the window. It looked this pretty for ten minutes and then a snow cloud blew in and the pictue changed completely. Luckily, I had the lights and shadows blocked already.

Here is the finished painting:

Night ferry

Today I worked on my drawing skills using charcoal for a couple of hours and then painted a small oil painting. It is 8x8 in size. This picture is of a night ferry in Venice. My husband asked if it was a ferry that takes people to Madeleine island, WI, where he used to come as a child. I guess it could be a ferry anywhere!

Yellow rose

I participated in a painting challenge today and painted a yellow rose. It is fun to see the different interpretations of the same subject! The challenging thing was how to make it glow. So I tried dark background and warm tint at the base of the lemon-colored rose.

It is 6x6, oil on stretched canvas.

I started this one yesterday, but had leave  unfinished for the night. Woke up early to finish it before my morning coffee.
This is one more picture from a post- Thanksgiving hike to Cascade Head.

Catch of the day

My friend last summer went crabbing and had a very successful day, bringing home a few for dinner. They looked multi- colored with heavy purple tints in a red bowl. I don't usually use purple as the dominant color, so I wanted to paint something unusual with purple in it. These crabs fit the bill. It is interesting that the highlights appear yellow- white or blue. There were also the red highlights noticeable. Enjoy!

Horses 1

We left the coast early on Sunday to get into town as early in the day as possible to get some of the chores done. The morning was clear and frosty in the valley that we were driving through. The ground was covered with icy patches. These horses looked liked they were shivering in the pasture. The picture was pretty monochromatic, with not much contrast. I new it would make an interesting study, so I painted it yesterday.

We went on a wonderful hike this weekend- to Cascade Head. We reached the viewpoint right before sunset. This was the view towards the river. I will paint the ocean view in a few days. Bid here:

Cascade Head

What a bright and gorgeous day on the coast today! The contrast between the color of the water and the yellow was pretty unusual for Oregon.

There is a resort on the Big Island that has a wonderful setting. I think it is Hilton. It has a boat that takes people from one part to the other. On the grounds they have multiple marble statues, surrounded by lush landscaping, a snorkeling pool, a shark pool and a dolphin pool. This is a picture of one of the statues on the grounds.
This painting is narrow and long: 12x 36, oil on stretched canvas.  Click here to buy:

Koi 3

I painted this one yesterday, but had to wait for the day light to take a picture to show the colors correctly. The under painting is umber. I have added the ripples. Kids liked the ripples.

Koi 2

I am still working on Koi fish. I'm playing with different backgrounds to see what I like the most. This is Koi 2. I painted the under painting bright orange and you could see it coming through in a few places.
My kids said that this fish looks older and wiser than the first one. It is oil on canvas 6x6.

Under the Scripps Pier, La Jolla

This picture is of a California pier, in San Diego. The pier is located in a very picturesque place. There are reflections and shadows. I wanted to paint a large one today. Here is the under painting - a work in progress.

And here is the finished painting:

This painting is larger -- 16x20. Here is a link to buy:

IIn Oregon one needs a full wetsuit to go surfing. The surf is good, but the water is pretty cold.

A walk on the beach

This is my friend's dog Lilly. The shadows were wonderful and dark. The painting turned to be almost monochromatic.

Joy of life

Pacific City is one of our favorite beaches -- there  is a pretty sizable sand hill as well as great surf and a large rock out in the water to round out the beauty. This is a random dog that had a lot of energy and was just loving the day and the surf. Enjoy!

A fuchsia flower

It have been a few busy days for me. I took a train to Seattle for a seminar. The train ride was gorgeous and I took a few pictures on the road that I would like to paint from perhaps this weekend. Here is a 4x4 picture of a flower. It is bright, like a jewel. The black looks darker on the photo than it is in real life.

Golden Owl

My dear friend moved to Central Oregon a couple of years ago to escape from the rain and enjoy the pine and juniper- scented air. She took a photo of an owl a while back. The back lighting makes the owl glow. Here is my rendition of the owl:

A jewel on a rainy day

It has been an incredibly sunny year in Portland! Today, though we woke up to a gloomy, rainy day. We wanted to stay in, stay cozy and read, paint and sit by the fire. Here is a picture of a camelia flower to brighten up the day.

Back to art making!

I have been painting, but not posting all this time. I learned how to play tennis, but recent injury has taken me out for a number of months.
I will try to paint several times a week from now on.
