Water lily

To join the challenge of the week I painted a water lily.

For the under painting I used Derwent ink sense sticks.

The sticks are water soluble, so after roughing in the colors I used water to toner the picture.
After the underpainting dried out, it was time for the pastels.

Here is the finished painting:

Feathered pinks

It was a pretty gray and rainy day tonight, so I was dreaming of a beautiful sunset with many pink clouds.

I could not stop playing with pastels and painted one more.
Reflections, 10x7 on sanded paper.

I have been wanting to paint with pastel after seeing some gorgeous works by a local artist. Finally, my new boxes came and I spent the last hour or so removing the wrappers and sorting them by color and value. Here is my box:

And here is my painting: ( 7.5x9 in on sanded paper):

It is not frequently I try painting the night. Here is my today's attempt. I was trying to make the waves shimmer.

Here is an exciting update-  the Dailypaintworks picked this picture to be the pick of the day!

The Mighty Pacific

I find water to be one of the most challenging of all subjects and rewarding at the same time.

This is the second painting in a series of three I am working on. The one left to paint is that of the Cascade Head in Lincoln City. All three will be 12x24, oil on stretched canvas. Enjoy!

Koi 8

This is the next painting in the Koi series. I have two more to paint.

Today's piece was a large one - of horses. It is oil on stretched canvas, 12x24.
I blocked the values yesterday in burnt sienna, so I could make progress faster today. I used the palette knife for the grass at the bottom of the painting to create texture. I have not tried that before, but really like the effect, so will use this technique again.

Sunny ram

I was trying to keep the ram looking warm and cheerful. It was fun to paint the  wool and the horns. This picture is 6x6, oil on stretched canvas.

Grand Canyon in the snow

I do not frequently paint canyons, but have always wanted to. Here is my fist one of the Grand Canyon. It is 8x10, oil on canvas.

Neskowin Beach

Neskowin is of my favorite beaches in Oregon. There is a river that separates the beach and frequently makes this large rock inaccessible in the winter during high tide.

I had out of town family visiting over the weekend and could not find time to paint. Today I wanted to paint something bright. This rooster was perfect!
