A Sleigh Horse

When there is a lot of snow, a company in Government Camp starts offering carriage tours of town. The horses are decorated with bells. They look Bavarian. I just could not resist and had to paint one!
This picture is 10x8, oil on canvas.

We were at the Meadows ski resort today again. Snow was dry and plentiful. I keep painting snow scenes. Here is one of two snowboarders.

Waves, Neskowin

I painted this picture last weekend. The ocean was very high in Neskowin, practically splashing the steps to at entry points.
This one is 6x6, oil on canvas

Liquid Gold

This is one more picture from the weekend. Golden light right before sunset made the contrast on the waves pretty dramatic and made the color of the water yellow. It was definitely fun to paint!

It was too cold to paint outside, so I took a photo and painted at home afterwards.
This picture is 10x8, oil on canvas.

I thought I would post something different than pictures of water. Here is a picture of a sheep I painted yesterday.

My challenges were to keep the back-lighting bright without making the picture appear flat and, of course, portraying the wool texture. Also I am trying out brighter backgrounds to make it a bit more cheerful. The rain here in Portland is back, so every bit of color helps.

This picture is 6x6, oil on stretched canvas.

Winter turquoise

This is the second picture I painted this weekend while in Lincoln City. The weather was gorgeous and the ocean was unusually bright for Oregon, almost tropical looking.

Salmon River

This was a very beautiful weekend in Oregon! Sunny and quiet at the coast with high surf. I painted up a storm.
Here is the first one- Salmon River. This view is from a parking lot where one of my favorite coastal trails start. The trail is called "Cascade Head". It goes up to a hill with the best views of the coast on a sunny day.

Show off!

Today I wanted to paint a bird and to paint something with a little more drama to it. So, this is the result. The bird is a crane, not native to the Pacific Northwest. Originally I just wanted to do a 6x6, but the crane was just too pretty, so it is an 8x8 oil on canvas. It might be fun to paint this crane on a long and narrow canvas.
I wanted the bird to glow and added the back lighting on the head and feathers. It was so much fun to paint!

I was interested in painting something bright. This rose was perfect!

It is 6x6, oil on stretched canvas.

We are iced in today in Portland, OR. Here is my response to the  challenge at the Daily Paintworks.  The task was to mainly use blue and pink to paint a picture. My husband thought that this is a painting of him kayaking on lake Superior, WI, near Madeline Island. The second guess was kayaking in the San Juan islands. It is not a painting of any one in particular. I was mainly concerned with relaying the atmospheric effects.

The picture is 10x8, oil on stretched canvas.

Yesterday was another gorgeous day on the mountain. On the way down we went to Government Camp for lunch and to take a stroll through town. Government Camp is the last little town before the mountain pass on the way up to Meadows or Timberline Ski resorts. The town is tiny and very quaint, in a Bavarian style, complete with horses pulling around sleighs with tourists. The town gets a fair amount of snow due to it's high elevation. We saw large rows of icicles on all of the buildings. They grow at interesting angles due to the wind in the area and frequently look like jagged dragon teeth.

I had fun trying to make icicles glow and look real.

Late afternoon skiing

This is another picture of late afternoon ski slopes at Meadows, Oregon. We are still having fun and enjoying the beautiful snow!

Windy day at Meadows!

We are back at Meadows ski resort on Mt Hood. It is an absolutely gorgeous day. I was hoping to work outside, but with the windshield it is probably near zero. The wind is worse up on the mountain and you can see snow blown off - it looks like the mountain is smoking. I went into the lodge to stay warm. So, this is the view from the lodge. My family is happily snowboarding. Snow is dry and fabulous!
Happy New Year !
